Welcome to FolkSpeller, a text file spelling checker program that will
allow you to correct misspelled words as they are found in the file. If
you use your computer for writing letters, articles, books, or
documentation, and have as much trouble with spelling, and 'fat' finger
errors as I do, you will find this program a handy tool to have.
FolkSpeller stores the correctly spelled words in a dictionary, and
looks up each word in a document to verify the spelling. FolkSpeller has
a few more functions that make it an excellent tool for a writer.
FolkSpeller will display how many words were checked in a document, and
create a concordance of unique words used since it was started. You may
also add your own words to the dictionary, or use a special word list.

This software is protected by both United States Copyright Law and
International Copyright Treaty provisions. You are allowed to make
copies of the software for archival purposes, and for evaluation
distribution. By evaluation distribution, FolksWare means that you may
copy the main operating program, configuration files, and documentation

The dictionary that is distributed with FolkSpeller, contains only a
few thousand words, enough to show you the operational characteristics
of the program. You may add words to the dictionary, but it would be so
much simpler to order our dictionary. The words you add must be spelled
correctly or the spelling checker will be of little value.
We save you the time of verifying the spelling of over 30,000 words.
Distribution is based on the 'Honor System'. You are on your honor to
purchase the software, if you decide to keep it. If you do not keep the

FolksWare does not have a site license as such, but we do offer a
substantial discount for multiple quantity users. After purchasing the
initial program, if you need more than one copy at a particular site,

FolksWare themselves, to be free of defects in materials and

is a problem with one of the disks, and this defect is reported to
FolksWare during the warranty period, return the disk, and
FolksWare will replace the diskette free of charge. FolksWare's
liability shall be limited to replacement of defective diskettes, and
shall not encompass any other damages, including, but not limited to
loss of profit, special, consequential, incidental or other similar

It is the responsibility of the person evaluating the product to
determine its fitness for use. The program was developed on an AT&T
6300 microcomputer, and has been tested on IBM-PC's and several
"work-a-like" computers. It should run on most all IBM 'look-a-like'
computers, as long as they are IBM compatible. If it does not run on

BACKUP your disks
-----------------
Before doing any thing, copy the original distribution disk to a working
disk, and store the original in a safe place. We recommend saving an
original copy of the dictionary, in case the user adds incorrectly
spelled words, he may reset to the initial set of words. The dictionary
file should be treated as you would any other data base with stored
data, i.e. the proper backup procedures should be followed.
The FolkSpeller dictionaries are capable of storing 100,000+ words on a
hard drive, or 40,000+ words on a floppy disk. Since FolkSpeller uses
data compaction, and suffix extraction, the actual number of words stored
on either medium is not able to be determined. Theoretically, the
dictionary can store 1,800,000 different words, 370,000 on a diskette.

1. RUNNING FolkSpeller
Two Drive system......
To run FolkSpeller, place the program disk in drive A, your document disk
in drive B, and type FSPELL.
The program will load itself, and present you with the intro screen.
After a short pause, you may press 'Q' to quit or any other key to start
the program which will then display the main menu screen. FolkSpeller uses
a built in set of defaults unless a configuration file is available on the
program disk. See Configuring FolkSpeller. You should now remove the
FolkSpeller disk and replace it with your Dictionary disk. If your
dictionary is stored on the same disk as FolkSpeller, just leave it in
the drive.
One drive system......
If you have a single disk drive, at the "continue" prompt, insert the
dictionary disk into the drive at his time. Note that the document that you
want to check must be on the dictionary disk.
In either case, there must be enough room on the disk for a back-up copy of
the document plus the dictionary, and any words you will add to it. If
there is not enough room on the disk, and a ".BAK" file exists, you will be
given an opportunity to delete that file and continue.

FolkSpeller is a menu driven program. All the menus will be displayed as the
one above. The menu title will be displayed at the left of the command line
in <xxx>. To initiate a command, you press the first letter of the command
(upper or lower case). If there is a '<CR>' at the extreme right of the
command line, you must press the enter or carriage return key after the
letter. In MiniDOS, you must type the commands, similar to DOS.

Wherever a help screen is available, you may press or enter 'H' to view
the screen. To Quit a particular menu, or the program, pressing or
entering 'Q' will either terminate FolkSpeller from the main menu, or
return to the main menu from a sub menu.
For instance, if you wanted to activate the spelling checker, you would
press the letter 'S', and you will notice that the command line will
change to the <SPELLING> menu.

Enter filename (Def Drv = B:)...
If you have selected the Spelling option from the main menu, you are now
ready to check the spelling of a document. You must enter the file name of
the document. Notice the prompt for a file name under the menu header. The
default file drive designator is shown in the prompt. If you want to change
the default drive, simply prefix the file name with a drive designator and a
colon, i.e. 'C:FILE.DOC'. If you enter a file name that can not be found,
another prompt will give you a chance to retry an entry. If you do not want
to check a document, entering nothing, and answering 'N' to the request to
try again will return you to the MAIN menu.
FolkSpeller will check the spelling of words in standard ASCII text files,
looking only at alphabetic words. Special symbols for formatting are
ignored.

Once a file name has been entered, and found on the disk, the program
will open the dictionary file, and start reading the document that you
specified, and verify each word it finds, by looking it up in the
dictionary. The program decides it has found a word when it finds two or
more letters in a row, terminated with a non-letter. Words with only one
letter are accepted as they are. Contractions or possessives, with
embedded apostrophes such as"train's" or "don't" will be looked up in
the dictionary. Hyphenated words are verified in parts separated by the
hyphen. Words that have imbedded symbols or numbers, will also be
verified in parts. The program will look up words regardless of whether
they are upper, lower, or a combination of both cases. Words continued
with a hyphen at the end of the line will be checked as one single
word.
NOTE: If a dictionary file is not found on the drive, one will be created
named FSPELL.DCT with no words. The dictionary requires about 13K
in its initial form. This space is used as words are added.
As words are verified, they will be displayed on the screen.
If a word is not found in the dictionary, the program will stop, highlight
the word on the screen, and wait for your command for what to do next.
Pressing the space bar, or any key except a command key will accept the
word into the document just the way it is spelled and restart the checking
process with the next word.
Add - command:
Pressing 'A' will add the word to the dictionary the way it is
currently spelled. After adding the word, it will be accepted
whenever it is found again. Remember, that if you add a
misspelled word to the dictionary, then the program will accept
that spelling wherever it finds it. Some words longer than 15
characters will not be added to the dictionary, but will be added
to the special words list. The dictionary extracts several suffixes
from words so some long words will be stored. See SpecialWord command
below. If there is not room on the disk to add new words, you will
receive a DISK FULL - CAN'T ADD error message.
Replace - command:
If the highlighted word was corrected earlier, the program will
display a prompt above the text such as:
Replace with 'school'?
Pressing 'R' will then replace the spelling of the word. You may
also configure FolkSpeller to automatically replace words once they are
corrected. See Configuring FolkSpeller.

Correct - command:
Pressing 'C' will allow you to correct the spelling of the word. To
correct, simply type the correct spelling over the incorrect word. Be
sure and type the whole word the way you want it to appear in the
document. Do not worry if the old word is longer, as these extra
characters will be thrown away. When you are finished, press the ENTER
key. Pressing the ENTER key with no changes leaves the word unchanged.
The program will recheck the spelling of the corrected word. If it
is still incorrect or not found, the program will stop again. If for
some reason, you want to use this spelling of the word, but do not want
to add it to the dictionary just press the space bar. The new spelling
will be used for this word, and be used to manually or automatically
replace the word later in the document.
NOTE: To correct a continued word, a prompt will ask you to enter the
word including a hyphen, if you want the word broken at the end of the
line. These corrected words are not added to the replace word queue.
Find - command: (new for version 3.1)
The find command will initiate a series of tests and look up to find
words that are spelled similar to the word that is highlighted. Since
the words it finds are limited to words in the dictionary, we
recommend using this command only when using the FolksWare dictionary.
The command will work with any dictionary. Words that are similar
will be displayed in a popup window above the highlighted word.
You may use these words as a guide for correction of the misspelled
word. If you purchase the FolksWare dictionary, we will tell you
how to initiate a more complete set of tests to find the corrected
spelling of a word. After the dictionary has been searched, the
program is ready for another command such as 'C'orrect.
Mark - command:
If you are not sure of the spelling, and would like to correct the
spelling later, you may mark the word with a special character by
pressing 'M'. This option will replace the last character of the
word with whatever character you are using for marking (see
Configuring FolkSpeller). After finishing the document, you may
then start your word processor and use the FIND function to locate
all the words you marked. Using this function will not change the
length of the lines in the document.

TempW - command:
Pressing 'T' will add the word to a temporary word list. Often
there are several words that are specific to a particular
document. Words such as proper names, addresses, slang, or
combinations of letters that have a special meaning to your
intended reader such as IEEE, NAPA, or Fred may be added to the
temporary word list when they are first found in the document.
From that point on, they will be accepted when they are found in
the text. This option speeds up the checking process, but
remember, these are temporary words. When checking several
documents, the temporary word list is cumulative until FolkSpeller
is terminated.
SpecialWord - command:
Pressing 'S' adds the word to the special words list. Many times,
the writer will be using words peculiar to a specific subject such
as medicine, or engineering, or computing. If there are several
special words that you find you need to use, but do not want to
store them in the dictionary, you may add these words to the
special word list. This list works just like the temporary word
list except that at the end of the session, you may save these
words to a file. You may reuse the list for other documents later
by selecting the WORDS option on the MAIN menu, and loading these
into the program before checking documents. (See Words Menu)
NOTE: The maximum length of words stored in the dictionary is 15
characters. Occasionally, you may use words greater than the
maximum. These words will not be found, and if you wish to prevent
the pause, you must either add them to the temporary or special
word list. You could create a list of special words for a specific
subject matter, such as medical terminology, and then load these
words into the program before checking that kind of document. Also,
if there is not enough memory on your machine to add new words to
memory, you will receive a MEMORY FULL - CAN'T ADD message.
Quit - command:
Pressing 'Q' will allow you to terminate checking a document. While
the document is being scanned, you may have to hold the 'Q' key
down for a second or two to get it to stop. Once stopped, you
will need to verify that you do wish to quit in the middle of the
document. If you press 'Y', the program will save the unchecked
portion with as much of the document as you have checked.
Pressing 'N' returns you to checking. An optional exit without
saving the previous work has been added to the quit options. Pressing

'X' at the quit prompt will terminate checking the current document,
without creating a corrected version of the document. This option
will only work from the quit prompt.
At the end of a document, the program reverts to the main menu, with
a mini report for that document. The report tells the user how many
words were checked in the document, how many special words have been
added since the program was started, and if you are creating a
concordance, how many unique words you have used. The number of special
and concordance words is cumulative until FolkSpeller is terminated. For
more about the concordance see Tips.
Dictionary Menu:
----------------
Selecting 'D' from the main menu, starts the dictionary maintenance part
of the program. You should see the following menu on your display.

Enter a word at the prompt 'Which word:'. You can then add the word to
the dictionary by pressing 'A', or delete the word from the dictionary by
pressing 'D', or you may correct the spelling of the word by pressing
'C'.
If you try to add an existing word, the program will warn you by
displaying 'word already exists.'
If you try to delete a non-existing word, the program will warn you
by displaying 'word does not exist.'
If you try to correct a non-existing word, the program will warn you
by displaying 'word does not exist.'
Entering 'Q' will terminate the dictionary maintenance portion of
the program, and return the user to the main menu.

NOTE: If you have checked a document that contained a word that is deleted
later, FolkSpeller will still recognize the word if was added to the
temporary, or special word list, or if it was added to the concordance.
You must restart FolkSpeller from DOS to eliminate these words.

word list or the concordance.

LoadSpecWords - command
Pressing 'L' will allow the user to load a list of special words
from a text file on a disk, into the special words list in the
program. The program will ask for the name of the word list file.
The text file list of words must be formatted one lowercase word
per line, and preferably in random order. Several special word lists
may be used at one time, by adding them one right after the other. These
words will be accepted by the spelling checker when found in a document
until the termination of FolkSpeller.
Special word list files may be created by using FolkSpeller to check a
document full of special words, and adding them to the special list,
and then saving those words in a file using the SaveSpecWords option.
SaveSpecWords - command
Pressing 'S' will allow the user to save all the words in the
special words list of the program to a disk file. The program will
ask for the name of the word list file to save. If the file
exists, the user will be asked if he wishes to overwrite that file
or not.

The file is written as a text file with one lowercase word per
line, in the order that they were added. ALL words in the special
words list are written to the file. Use your text editor to modify
this list. If the special word list text file is stored alphabetically,
The user should use an editor to mix the words in a random order to
improve the speed performance of the program.
Concordance - command
Pressing 'C' will allow the user to save the concordance, a list
of unique words, and how many times each one is used, to a disk
file. The user will be asked to enter the file name of the
concordance file to be saved. If the file exists, the user will be
asked if he wishes to overwrite that file or not.
The file is written as a text file with one lowercase word, the
quantity used, and optionally, the letter 'S' if the word is in
the special word list, per line. The words are in alphabetical
order.

MiniDOS is a DOS like shell utility that allows the user to do some file
manipulation while using FolkSpeller. It is designed to operate
very much like IBM-DOS or MS-DOS, with a few enhancements.
The prompt '[B:]' indicates the default drive is 'B' .
The DOS commands that are supported in modified form are:

CHD or CD ------- Change Directory
REN ------------- Rename file (no globals)
COPy ------------ Copy file (no globals)
DEL or ERA ------ Delete file (no globals)
TYP ------------- Type file

MiniDOS requires only the first three letters of most commands as
shown above, but will accept full commands such as 'RENAME'. MiniDOS is
not case dependent. MiniDOS will also help the user complete commands
if only a partial command is entered. For instance, to copy one file to
another disk using MiniDOS, if you enter only COPy, MiniDOS will ask you
for the file name, and the destination.
DIRectory - command
The current directory will be displayed on the screen in the
wide format starting with the directory name, the files, the
disk space used, and the volume name if it exists. Global
characters may be used as in DOS.
Ex: [A:] dir b:fred??.*
CHDir or CD - command
The user may change the current directory of the default disk
drive.
Ex: [C:] cd /fred/letters
REName - command
Renames a file on a disk. If the new file name already exist,
the file will not be renamed. Globals are not allowed.
Ex: [B:] rename c:fred.txt fred.4
(file is renamed on c: drive)
COPy - command
Copies a file from a disk to another disk. It will not allow
copying to the same disk with the same name. You may rename
the file, and copy to the same disk. Globals are not allowed.
Ex: [B:] Copy fred.txt fred.444
If you enter 'COPY CON:filename' then a text file will be
created using the keyboard input for the source. You must enter
the character '}'as the first character on the last line to
terminate the file. The last line is not written to the file.

DELete or ERAse - command
Deletes a file from a disk. User must verify the deletion.
Globals are not allowed.
Ex: [C:] erase b:fred.444
TYPe - command
Types a file to the screen as in DOS, except, it pauses after
15 lines have been displayed. Pressing any key continues the
typing of the file. Pressing the ESCape key will terminate
typing the file at the pause.
Ex: [A:] TYPE FRED.TXT
Other commands
'CLS' - will clear the window area.
'Q'- will return to the main menu.
'H'- will pop up a help screen.
'Cntl-X'- will erase the current command.
'Cntl-R'- will recall the last command entered.
'Cntl-D'- will recall one character of the last command at a
time.
Change the default drive the same as DOS.('B:' = B drive)
3. Configuring FolkSpeller
--------------------------
FolkSpeller can be configured to operate in different ways. After
starting FolkSpeller, when in the main menu, type 'CONF'. The screen
will be erased, and replaced with the configure screen.
To change any existing value, just enter a new value. If you do not
want to change a value, just press the carriage return key. You must
enter or accept the following information:
1) Default file drive (where to look for documents)
This can also be changed by adding a drive specifier to the file
name, or by using MiniDOS.
2) Dictionary drive (where to find the dictionary)
If a dictionary does not exist on this drive, one will be
created with a few key words.
3) The character used to mark words(choose one displayed)

Answer the following questions:
4) Do you want to create Concordance? Y/N
Answering 'Y' will cause the program to store every unique word
that it looks up in a concordance file in memory. Words will not
be added to the concordance unless you answer 'Y'es.
5) Do you want to Auto-Replace words? Y/N
Answering 'Y' will cause the program to automatically replace
corrected spelling of words it finds more than once.
A color bar is displayed for color machines, and you may set the
display colors for your version.

You are now finished with the configuration, and you will be asked,
'Do you wish to USE, SAVE & use, REDO these values?'.
Pressing 'U' or the carriage return will use these values for the
program. Pressing 'S' will save these values in a file, FSPELL.CFG, as
well as using them for the program. If the file created, FSPELL.CFG is
on the disk when the program is restarted, these values will be
recalled and used. Pressing 'R' will start the configuration process.
4.TIPS
------
RAM Drives:
Since FolkSpeller has to look up words in a file that is stored on a
disk, it lends itself to operation using a RAM drive in memory. If
your machine has enough memory to create a RAM drive large enough to
store the dictionary, you may make the operation of FolkSpeller very
fast by using the RAM drive. During the configuration of FolkSpeller,
you will need to change the dictionary drive designator to the RAM
drive designator. Remember, that the RAM drive must hold the entire
dictionary plus any new words that are added. The dictionary requires
approximately 10 bytes per word for storage. Copy the dictionary back
to the disk before turning off the machine, or all new words added to
it will be lost.

CONCORDANCE:
The generation of a concordance file is controllable from the
configuration menu option. With the concordance off, and using a
normal disk for the dictionary, the computer will look up each and
every word that you have in a document that you are checking. This
method will cause the program to be somewhat slow, and is not
recommended.
When FolkSpeller is set to generate a concordance, each unique word is
stored in memory after it is looked up. This means that the program
will only look up the word in the dictionary once per session. The
speed of the program will depend on the number of unique words in the
documents. Generally, the longer the document, the faster the program
will get.
At the end of a session, you may save the concordance as an
alphabetically arranged list of unique words used. This list may be
used by the writer to assess the extent of his/her vocabulary. The
list may also be used by The FolksWare Company's FolksDexer program
that is in development at this time. FolksDexer will create an index
of a document, using a word input list as the basis.
Special dictionaries.
FolkSpeller can be used to check more than just reports, manuals, or
articles. Since FolkSpeller creates a new dictionary if one is not
available on the designated drive, specialized dictionaries may be
created by the user. A Pascal dictionary may be created to check a
source program, or optionally, to automatically replace words in the
source code. To do this, you would first start with a new dictionary.
To use FolkSpeller with a new dictionary, see the parameters below.
As you find a variable name that you want replaced, instead of
accepting it and adding it to the dictionary, you first correct it to
the new name. As the source code is read, FolkSpeller will allow you
to replace the old with the new each time it finds the old name. If
FolkSpeller is configured for automatic replacement, it will do this
without stopping.
You may also find the need for a foreign language dictionary which you
may create by checking a document without using your main dictionary.
The dictionary is limited, however, to the English alphabet.

PARAMETERS:
There are some optional parameters that can be used when loading
FolkSpeller into memory. To use any of them, simply add them to the
command line when calling FolkSpeller.
Special word lists can be added by specifying them with parameters.
Ex: FSPELL S=MEDICAL.LST will automatically load the words in
medical.lst to the special word list in the program. More than one
list can be loaded by adding more parameters.
Special dictionaries may be used automatically by specifying them on
the command line.
Ex: FSPELL D=PASCAL.DCT will use only the Pascal special dictionary.
The default is FSPELL.DCT.
Other parameters may be found in the FSPMORE.DOC file that comes on The
FolksWare Dictionary disk.
5. CONCLUSION
----------
Version 1 was the conceptual program, written in BASIC and was
never released to the public.
Version 2 was written and compiled using Turbo Pascal, using the B+tree
indexing system found in Borland's Turbo ToolBox. We used this version
to debug the presentation, as the Turbo ToolBox indexing system is
not adequate for this kind of program.
Version 3 used our own dictionary management package, and had all the
temporary,special, and concordance portions added. Replacement of
words, and a new MiniDOS package was also added. This version saw
very limited distribution.
Version 3.1 added the FIND command, and fixed a bug in the available
memory test at the front of the program that on large memory IBM's,
(not my AT&T 6300) would not allow the program to run.
Version 3.1 is the first full release of the program. Previous
distribution has been to several friends and local people in order
to get the program debugged. A special thanks to all those people
who have taken the time to test and evaluate the program. Without their
impartial unbiased evaluation, several small things may have been
overlooked. Of course, they get free copies with our sincere thanks.

7) and the word 'NOTPAID' if you have not purchased FolkSpeller.
If you need to access the dictionary in another subdirectory, you may
specify the dictionary path by including the parameter "P={path}".
EXAMPLE: P=\edit\dicts\ {40 characters max} NOTE the back slashes!
The drive is specified in the configure file FSPELL.CFG or from the
configure option.

You can try other combinations, and determine which works best for you...
FolkSpeller does not use overlays or other files after the initial
start of the program, after you have received the prompt "Press any key
to continue" you may remove the disk containing FolkSpeller. If you want
to reconfigure the program, and save this new configuration (FSPELL.CFG),
you must replace the disk in the drive. FSPELL.CFG must be on the disk
in order to load the new configuration.
